BROOKLYN, NY, October 8, 2014: Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams hosted pet adoption organizations and advocacy groups, along with several dogs and cats, on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall to announce an effort to advance adoption of shelter pets in the borough and across the city. He promoted his Adopt-A-Pet Day this Saturday on Brooklyn Borough Hall Plaza, taking place from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM, where shelter pets will be present and ready for adoption. Additionally, he unveiled a legislative push to incentivize New Yorkers to adopt pets from animal shelters or humane societies; this bill, which provided a tax credit of no more than $100, for up to three pets per taxable year, was introduced in the last legislative session in Albany by State Senator Kevin Parker. Borough President Adams expressed his support for the reintroduction of this legislation, which would support costs associated with pet adoption and ownership, as well as for the exploration of a similar measure on the city level.
“October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, a time where we’re reminded of the millions of cats and dogs in our shelter system just waiting to be rescued, waiting to find a loving home, waiting to show all the love and support they have inside,” said Borough President Adams. “My mission as Borough President is to grow healthy children and families, and pets can be such an important part of that equation. They are our exercise buddies, our confidants, our friendly faces to greet us when we come home. Shelter animals are Brooklynites too, and in the spirit of One Brooklyn, I am launching my push to bring our furry neighbors into healthy and happy homes.”
Groups in attendance at Borough President Adams’ announcement, which are also taking part in Saturday’s event, included the ASPCA, Brooklyn Bark, Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals, Sean Casey Animal Rescue, Urban Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitation, and Veterinary Referral Emergency Group Animal Hospital.
“The ASPCA is happy to join Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams to raise awareness about all of the wonderful dogs and cats in New York City’s shelters who are just waiting for someone to take them home,” said Michelle Villagomez, New York City Legislative Director for the ASPCA. “Every October, the ASPCA celebrates Adopt a Shelter Dog Month to promote the adoption of shelter dogs and celebrate the many different types, sizes, breeds and varieties of great dogs available from shelters. We look forward to finding these loveable dogs their forever homes at Brooklyn Adopt-a-Pet Day on Saturday.”
“We are honored to partner with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and his office to emphasize the importance of adoption, especially for the hundreds of animals currently awaiting adoption in Brooklyn shelters,” said Jane Hoffman, founding president of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. “On behalf of the Alliance and our participating organizations, we want to extend our gratitude to Borough President Adams for his support and encourage all Brooklynites to come out and meet their new best friend at Brooklyn Cares Adopt-a-Pet-Day this Saturday. Together we can make a difference.”
