Brooklyn mini-ballerina performed with the American Ballet Theatre
All day long
From 10-07-17 to 04-08-17

This is an uplifting story for many young dancers in Brooklyn who thought they would never have their fair chance to be good….especially for minority girls and boys.  Covenant Ballet works with ABT’s education programs to bring opportunities to the under-represented and under-served.

Every young dancer’s dream is to perform in a renowned ballet company among professional dancers. This past Spring season, 12 year old mini-ballerina Simona Garcia found herself living that very dream on the stage of the Lincoln Center Metropolitan Opera House in Manhattan. Simona performed with the American Ballet Theatre in its full-length ballets “Don Quixote” as one of the “Les Petits Amours” and later in “Les Corsaire” as a child dancer.

A young student of the Covenant Ballet Theatre of Brooklyn, Simona was one of the five students from CBT to be accepted into the inaugural year of ABT’s Project Plie bridge classes at the distinguished Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. After the first year, she received a full scholarship at the JKO School in the 2016-17 regular training program. Her talent was well appreciated when she danced the lead role as Mary Lennox in CBT’s production of the “Secret Garden Ballet” in 2016. Presently, Simona is happy to be back at CBT for its 4-week Summer Intensive Program from July 10 – August 4, 2017.

Covenant Ballet has a good relationship with the educational programs of the American Ballet Theatre. Through Project Plié, a comprehensive initiative sponsored by ABT to increase racial and ethnic representation in ballet and diversify America’s ballet companies, the five students from Covenant Ballet had the opportunity to enrich their dance schedules at CBT with bridge classes at ABT’s JKO School. In 2016 CBT, in collaboration with Project Plié, awarded its Roberta Solomon Ballet Scholarship to a qualified young girl from the Boys and Girls Club of America. CBT currently utilizes the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum to develop its ballet programs. This curriculum is a breakthrough 8 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. It consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels. CBT Academy has six ABT® Certified Teachers.
