“The gun violence epidemic will not be solved with thoughts and prayers. There are common-sense, bipartisan-supported reforms proposed by lawmakers across this country that would stop tens of thousands of preventable injuries and deaths every year. In the face of pressure and threats from extremist ideologues, my former colleagues in the State Legislature have forged ahead with bold action. On behalf of my fellow Brooklynites, I thank them for their leadership, particularly on passing the extreme risk protection order bill from State Senator Kavanagh and Assembly Member Simon that will immediately remove firearms from a home in the event of domestic violence; this measure has been a priority for my administration.
“There is much more we can and must do to end gun violence. I will continue to champion a range of common-sense, bipartisan-supported reforms that have yet to be signed into law, including safer gun storage, microstamping of ammunition, as well as the establishment of a firearm violence research institute. I will continue to advocate for smart gun technologies such as fingerprint recognition and micro-cameras, advancements that promote safety and accountability. Furthermore, I will continue to push forward meaningful policy debates on new frontiers like limits on assault weapon ammunition sales and social media checks for gun permit approvals.
“As a former police officer and responsible gun owner, I believe that it’s time to stop using the Second Amendment as a shield to protect senseless gun violence. The voices of survivors and their families must continue to ring out for reform.”
