“This Veterans Day, I ask all Brooklynites to find a way to show our appreciation for the men and women of our nation’s armed forces. These heroes, along with their families, have put it all on the line in the name of our freedom and security. Advancing their general welfare must be a priority for all of us, from providing them with the support and resources they have earned to reminding them of our gratitude for their service.
“Brooklyn has a proud military tradition, including the former supply base at the Brooklyn Army Terminal – the largest such site in the country through World War II, and the historic Fort Hamilton, which continues to support our region. I am proud to honor that tradition today as a group of local veterans march with a battle-scarred Brooklyn flag, carried in the Persian Gulf War, in America’s Parade. The spirit of One Brooklyn, along with the support and solidarity of its residents, was carried into battle through this flag that now stands proudly in Brooklyn Borough Hall as a tribute to the bravery of those men and women who brought it safely home. Today, it will once more be carried into service, this time by veterans who have bravely served our nation and are justly honored for their service and their sacrifice.”
