“I stand in opposition to tonight’s scheduled flag burning in Fort Greene Park; in addition to not being a permitted event by the Department of Parks and Recreation and the New York City Police Department, its message is one that risks division at a time where unity is truly needed. I am sympathetic to those protesting institutional racism in our society, but burning the American flag is a fringe act that will do nothing to combat the challenges we face. Fort Greene Park is not just a park, but a resting place for thousands of brave men and women that died while being held captive on prison ships during the Revolutionary War; we should not do anything to desecrate the memory of these martyrs. I hope in the days ahead that we will have more constructive conversations and demonstrations that are effective in building national consensus to move justice and equality in our nation forward.”
