“I shared the outrage of so many in our city and across our country earlier this year, when it was first reported that the Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park was without power, and inmates were suffering from freezing cold temperatures in the dead of winter. The new report from the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General paints a troubling picture of systemic problems at the facility that differs significantly from explanations we received at the time. The lack of communication and transparency from the Federal Bureau of Prisons only compounds the issue.
“I hope the Federal Bureau of Prisons takes the report’s recommendations seriously and implements them immediately. Inmates’ rights matter. I want to thank our partners in Congress, particularly Representatives Velázquez and Nadler, for their steadfast advocacy.”
