“Starting today, thanks to a vote by the New York State Board of Regents earlier this month, a certification in computer science instruction can be obtained by teachers in our city. This regulation is a significant boost for my administration’s efforts to advance K-12 education in our borough, following a years-long push associated with our Code Brooklyn initiative to give every one of our public school students the opportunity to learn how to code. Certified computer science teachers, who are licensed in a high-quality standardized fashion, are best able to advance a program of study that trains our students for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
“I’ve allocated more than $100 million in the last four years to build out technology infrastructure in our schools, but it takes well-equipped educators to maximize these tools and, in turn, our children’s full academic potential. This certification is critical to this mission. Brooklyn has led the way in putting computer science education first, and it is my hope that this subject becomes a part of every school’s curriculum going forward.
“I appreciate the efforts of Assembly Member Simon, who has pushed legislation in Albany at my request to establish this teacher accreditation, I applaud the advocacy of education advocates who have long carried the torch in this campaign, and I acknowledge the hard work of Chancellor Rosa and all of the Regents on this new policy.”
