BROOKLYN, NY, September 2, 2014: Last Friday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams expressed his support for ovarian cancer awareness with Tell Every Amazing Lady about Ovarian Cancer (T.E.A.L.) for the upcoming “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” in September. Borough President Adams announced during a press conference on the steps of his office in Downtown Brooklyn that Brooklyn Borough Hall would be lit the color teal beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, September 3rd through Monday September 8th. This will be the second year the Borough President’s Office will light Brooklyn Borough Hall teal to spread awareness of the disease and the first year of this annual tradition under the administration of Borough President Adams.
“Ovarian cancer is a major issue affecting the women of Brooklyn,” said Borough President Adams. “According to some alarming statistics from the National Cancer Institute, there are estimated to be over 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer nationwide this year; there will be over 14,000 deaths attributed to the disease by year’s end; and 44.6%, less than half of all cases, will survive with the disease after five years. I applaud the members of T.E.A.L. for turning pain into purpose and helping educate Brooklyn’s amazing ladies on the dangers of this disease.”
“Today was an important day for all Amazing Ladies and their families,” said Pamela Esposito-Emery, co-founder and CEO of T.E.A.L. “Every time we are able to help create public awareness about this devastating disease we get closer to saving more lives. Since September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we need everyone’s help so that we can Tell Every Amazing Lady about Ovarian Cancer.”
T.E.A.L. Board Member Flora Poleshchuk and members of the Central Brooklyn Lions Club also appeared alongside the Borough President to discuss their organization’s activities for the month of September, including a 5K run followed by a 2.5 mile walk through Prospect Park.
