BROOKLYN, NY, April 11, 2014: Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams joined America Works of New York, Inc. and the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) to host a job fair for low-income Brooklynites currently receiving public assistance. Over 500 residents were scheduled to attend this hiring event, with over thirty-five employers interviewing for hundreds of open positions to be filled.
“I’m in the business of getting Brooklyn back to work,” said Borough President Adams. “Borough Hall is pleased to partner with organizations like America Works of New York, Inc. that can bring hiring opportunities to our residents in greatest need. When Brooklynites are employed, our entire economy benefits. I look forward to this being the first of many job fairs I can host as Borough President.”
Since 1984, America Works of New York has moved over 350,000 hard-to-place individuals into the workforce, including military veterans, long-term welfare and food stamp recipients, former criminal offenders, people who are homeless and living in shelters, youths aging out of foster care, non-custodial parents, people living with HIV/AIDS as well as people receiving Social Security Insurance (SSI)/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). America Works of New York is currently contracted by the HRA’s Back 2 Work Program to help Brooklyn residents who are receiving public assistance find employment.
“We are so excited to partner with our new Borough President Eric Adams on this hiring event,” said America Works of New York, Inc Chief Executive Officer Dr. Lee Bowes. “America Works is dedicated to helping Brooklyn residents receiving public assistance find good full time jobs. I am confident that this hiring event will lead to hundreds of Brooklyn residents getting employed. I would like to thank Borough President Eric Adams for graciously hosting us. We look forward to working with him for years to come.”
“With a variety of employers ready to interview candidates, job fairs are an excellent venue to connect New Yorkers to employment in their own communities,” said Steven Banks, the Commissioner of the New York City Human Resources Administration. “HRA is grateful to Borough President Eric Adams for making the Brooklyn Borough Hall an available and accessible location for this job fair.”
