BROOKLYN, NY, May 16, 2014: On Tuesday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams hosted the first-ever Cinco de Mayo celebration in Brooklyn Borough Hall, in conjunction with Council Member Carlos Menchaca, the first Mexican-American elected to public office in New York City. Mexicans represent 100,000 people in Brooklyn or one out of every twenty-five Brooklynites. Additionally, 30 percent of the city’s Mexican population lives in Brooklyn, the highest concentration out of the five boroughs.
“We give thanks for the contributions that our Mexican-American residents and citizens have made to our borough,” said Borough President Adams. “They’re why we need to fight hard to make sure we have a municipal ID, they’re why we need to fight hard to pass the Dream Act, they’re why we need to fight hard to make sure that our police department doesn’t stigmatize any group so that they can see the sunlight and not have to live in the shadows of America and the great city called Brooklyn, New York.”
Entertainment was provided by Quetzalcoatl, a local Mexican folk dance troupe, and Flor de Toloache, an all-female mariachi band. Refreshments were provided courtesy of the Kings County Democratic Party. Other notable guests included Consul General of Mexico Sandra Fuentes, First Lady of Puebla Martha Erica Alonso de Morena Valle and former Governor of Oaxaca Jose Murat.
