Brooklyn, NY – Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams encouraged Brooklynites from every neighborhood in the borough to apply for an opening on one of Brooklyn’s 18 local community boards. Those interested can submit their application online. Community boards are tasked with dealing with land use issues, weighing in on the issuance of permits such as liquor licenses, assessing neighborhood needs, and addressing community concerns. Borough presidents are responsible for the appointment for each of their community board’s 50 unsalaried members, half of whom are nominated by local members of the City Council. Borough President Adams announced that the closing date for application submissions for an appointment this year will be Friday, February 14th.
“Joining a community board is the best way to get involved and make a difference in your neighborhood,” said Borough President Adams. “Since I first took office, we have worked to increase representation on community boards among younger people and other underrepresented groups. Whether you live in Cobble Hill or Canarsie, Bushwick or Brighton Beach, I encourage every Brooklynite to apply and make your voice heard.”
Since 2015, Borough President Adams has used the authority granted under a new State law that gives borough presidents the ability to appoint two members who are at least 16 years of age to each community board. In November of last year, he hosted a Youth Civic Congress event at Brooklyn Borough Hall, which equipped young people throughout the borough with the tools for getting involved in local government.
Applications for 2020 appointments and re-appointments for Brooklyn community boards are available at brooklyn-usa.org. Applicants must be New York City residents in order to serve on a community board. To qualify for a particular board, they must live, work in, or have a professional or other significant interest in that board’s geographic district. The application is available online on a rolling basis to encourage a robust, diverse pool of submissions year-round.
