Brooklyn, NY – Frontline medical caregivers throughout New York City have been working bravely to protect and care for those affected by COVID-19. Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams joined Brooklyn vegan restaurant Greedi Kitchen LLC to distribute 200 plant-based meals to staff at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center.
The food distribution service is one of the many actions Borough President Adams has taken to address food insecurity and help New Yorkers strengthen their health during the coronavirus crisis. Borough President Adams recognizes that in addition to proper social distancing and the use of face masks, a nutritious diet can play an important role in preventing more deaths from the virus. As he explained in a recent public service announcement (PSA) alongside medical professionals, plant-based foods are effective for preventing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), many of these health issues are the same underlying conditions that put someone at high-risk for serious illness from COVID-19.
“As our health care force works tirelessly to help our community, providing them with nutritious meals is one way we can support them and express our gratitude for their service. The meals we provided today are plant-based because we must protect and maximize the health of our medical caregivers on the frontlines. The immune system is the body’s defense against disease, and plant-based foods provide the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber required to keep that system at its strongest,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
“Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, physicians, nurses, and many hospital support staff have been working overtime to care for the many patients affected by this crisis. Our health care force continually put themselves second to the care of their patients. It is time for us to step up now and help take care of them by providing healthy, plant-based, nourishing foods to support their efforts,” said Latisha Daring of Greedi Kitchen LLC.
“Woodhull Hospital thanks Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams for his continued support. Today meant a great deal to our hospital workers. We greatly appreciate BP Adams providing meals to the staff and personally taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with staff and distribute meals. We can’t thank him enough,” said Michelle Hernandez, director of marketing and communications at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center.
This initiative was made possible by a partnership between Borough President Adams and plant-based restaurants Greedi Kitchen LLC and Sol Sips. Sponsors of today’s delivery were Ladies of Hope Ministries (LOHM) and Liberty Fashion & Lifestyle Fairs. Greedi Kitchen LLC stated that they conducted “all solicitation of corporate sponsors.” Collaboration on the culinary efforts came from Lilian Correa, a plant-based dietician and trained chef, Latisha Daring, and the Greedi Kitchen Team.
