BROOKLYN, NY, October 27, 2015: Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams celebrated DII Stores, a chain of discount neighborhood department stores, as the latest honoree of Brooklyn’s Community Businesses, a series where he honors local companies with a commitment to the neighborhoods they serve. After touring their main location and headquarters at the Trump Village Shopping Center in Coney Island last Tuesday, he presented members of the Dweck family, both of whom are natives of the borough, with a citation recognizing their dedication to serving the community. Borough President Adams applauded DII Stores as a great enterprise that fulfills the tradition of Brooklyn’s Community Businesses.
“Brooklyn’s Community Businesses go above and beyond the work of a typical nine-to-five operation; these stars of the private sector are charting a new path forward for corporate citizenship in our borough,” said Borough President Adams. “DII Stores is truly worthy of this honor for how they have gone the extra mile to serve their customers in need, especially in their most difficult hours. From the charitable owners to the hard-working employees, the example this company sets across Brooklyn is worth our praise.”
As of October 14th of this year, DII Stores employs 509 people, 185 of them being Brooklynites, at their locations in Bay Ridge, Coney Island, Greenpoint, Park Slope, and Sunset Park. The business supports local police precincts by providing goods such as paper products for their annual National Night Out events. In the past year, they offered merchandise at no cost to local families whose homes burned down. In the days following Superstorm Sandy, their Coney Island location opened for business without electricity solely to help residents purchase necessities such as candles, batteries, food, and water; they operated by sunlight each day until power was restored. DII Stores’ owners, Harold and Morris Dweck, have contributed greatly to community service; Harold is the chairperson of an organization responsible for caring for 400 underprivileged families in Brooklyn, while Morris is the president of the Edmond J. Safra synagogue as well as the vice president of a non-profit focused on anti-terror efforts to protect local community interests.
“On behalf of the entire staff at DII Stores, I would like to extend our appreciation for the great honor bestowed on us by Borough President Adams,” said Morris Dweck, co-owner of DII Stores. “Our work for the community is not done for the glory, but it is rewarding when acknowledged by our peers in government and society. This recognition has ignited our spirt and motivated us to do even more going forward.”
Borough President Adams expressed that he looks forward to recognizing and publicizing future additions to the list of Brooklyn’s Community Businesses in the months ahead.
