BROOKLYN, NY, September 24, 2018: On Thursday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams honored a diverse array of Brooklynites as part of his latest “Heroes of the Month” ceremony, highlighted by New York City Police Department (NYPD) Brooklyn Special Victims Detective Kimberly Marshall. As the lead investigator into the rape of an 11-year-old girl in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens on Wednesday, August 29th, she helped apprehend Julio C. Ayala, an 18-year-old believed to be affiliated with the multinational criminal gang MS-13. A few days after the attack, following the NYPD’s release of surveillance footage, she and other investigators tracked down the suspect to a building construction site nearby and arrested him; he was subsequently charged with burglary, criminal sexual act, endangering the welfare of a child, rape, and sexual abuse. Borough President Adams recognized Detective Marshall, a 15-year veteran of the NYPD, as “Hero of the Month” for September.
“The actions of Detective Marshall and her colleagues in this apprehension exemplify the importance of law enforcement in our lives every day,” said Borough President Adams. “I really want to thank her, the family impacted by this heinous crime thanks her, and our community thanks her. There’s no telling what could have happened to other children without her service.”
At the same ceremony held in the Rotunda of Brooklyn Borough Hall, Borough President Adams also presented “Heroes of the Month” honors for the months of May, June, July, and August. He recognized Garry Danilov, an immigrant from the Soviet Union who lives with his family in Brighton Beach, as his May “Hero of the Month” for being a Good Samitarian who rescued victims from a car wreck in Sheepshead Bay on Sunday, May 27th. His June “Hero of the Month” was presented to Achievement First Brooklyn High School teacher K.M. DiColandrea, who founded a traveling speech and debate team for his Crown Heights students that has won national championships across the country; in late June, two of his team members made the quarterfinals of the National Speech & Debate Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For July’s “Hero of the Month,” Borough President Adams honored Bijoun Eric Jordan, a Frederick Douglass Academy VII English teacher who has raised tens of thousands of dollars for dozens of his low-income students of color in Brownsville to travel to Spain and, this summer, to Japan. Finally, Food Bank for New York City, a citywide non-profit that launched a donation drive at Brooklyn Borough Hall, in partnership with Borough President Adams, to support women in need with feminine care products; to date, they have collected more than 4,000 pounds of items.
“This is probably one of the most diverse groups of ‘Heroes of the Month’ we’ve had the privilege to honor at Brooklyn Borough Hall,” said Borough President Adams. “When you look at these stories, they really personify what makes this borough and this city such a great place: extraordinary people doing extraordinary things and going beyond the call of duty to make life better for countless New Yorkers. They’re representative of a larger body of people in our communities who go unnoticed, who extend themselves with their financial and human capital to make a difference.”
