BP MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON EXTENSION OF TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS FOR THOUSANDS OF HAITIANS IN BROOKLYN

Brooklyn has become the home to everyone from everywhere—by some estimates, Brooklyn has the largest population of Haitians in America. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that after a devastating earthquake shook Haiti in January, 2010, most of the people who sought refuge in New York City came to Brooklyn. As of today, 8,000 of the 12,000 Haitians in New York City covered under Temporary Protective Status are in Brooklyn. I applaud Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for keeping America’s promise.

I look forward to applauding this decision at a pre-planned ceremony raising the Haitian Flag at Borough Hall with Councilman Mathieu Eugene, tomorrow, May 18 at 11:45 am.
