BP MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON DEATHS OF BROOKLYN-BASED PHOTOJOURNALISTS TIM HETHERINGTON AND CHRIS HONDROS IN LIBYA

“Brooklyn extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Brooklyn-based, Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington and Brooklynite and war photographer Chris Hondros of Getty Images, both killed in Misrata, Libya, after being hit by mortar fire. These two men were doing what they did best—reporting to the world about the horrors of war. Mr. Hetherington was a proud Brooklynite by way of England, and Mr. Hondros recently photographed the AIDS quilt on display at Brooklyn Borough Hall for our World AIDS Day observance last December. I hope the loved ones of both of these brave men will be comforted by the prayers and thoughts of all of us grateful for their professional sacrifice.”
