BP MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON MAYORAL CONTROL LEGISLATION
“I stand with Governor Paterson and the Mayor in calling on the State Senate to vote to extend mayoral control. The last thing I want to see is the sunset of mayoral control, which I believe has been the best form of school governance for the students, families, schools and teachers of this city.
I realize however, that should the clock strike midnight with no renewal, we will revert to a Board of Education system. In the event this occurs, I certainly take the responsibility of making an appointment to the Board of Education very seriously. I will not announce an appointment choice however, until the fate of the legislation has been determined.
I also would advise that a reconstituted Board meet tomorrow (Wednesday) morning and take immediate action to preserve continuity of all processes and make this transition as smooth as possible for the families of New York City—as we collectively move to resolve the matter in Albany going forward.”
