On Monday, September 1, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Special Assistant to the Borough President Yvonne Graham joined Governor David Paterson, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, other elected officials and hundreds of thousands of revelers at the 41st Annual West Indian American Day Parade. Joining BP Markowitz on a float were brother and sister Keeth and Erinn Smart, Brooklynites who captured silver medals for fencing at the recent Olympics in Beijing, China.

The parade traveled through the heart of Brooklyn’s Caribbean-American community along Eastern Parkway, and featured the booming music, steel drums, flashy costumes, spicy food and lively atmosphere that are the trademark of the annual carnival.

Brooklyn is proud to be the Caribbean-American Capital of America.
