On May 23, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz hosted Midwood’s very own Aleksandr Ostrovskiy, a sixth-grader at I.S. 234 who was crowned national chess champion after out-maneuvering more than 2,000 students at a tournament in Pittsburgh.
The Russian-born Aleksandr, 12, is no stranger to competition—he has represented the United States in the Pan-American Games in Ecuador, and was awarded the silver medal at the North American Youth Chess Championship.
