On January 12, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz helped mulch Brooklyn Borough Hall’s 38-foot-tall Balsam Fir at the 6th annual Christmas Tree Recycling and Wood Chip Mulch Giveaway sponsored by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Green-Wood Cemetery.

BP Markowitz was joined by area children and the green and blue recycling bin characters. Free woodchips were made available for those who brought their trees to be mulched, and participants also had the opportunity to speak with Master Composters from Brooklyn Botanic Garden on the benefits of wood chip mulch.

Said BP Markowitz, “Let’s face it, at this time of year Brooklyn can be called both an epicenter of culture—and home of the mulcher! When it comes to being ‘green,’ and mulching your Christmas trees so we can keep the city’s environment healthy, no one does it better than Brooklynites. Remember, in Brooklyn, it’s ‘hip’ to chip!”
