STATEMENT OF DEPUTY BROOKLYN BOROUGH PRESIDENT YVONNE GRAHAM ON DEATH OF BROOKLYN STUDENT FROM SUSPECTED CASE OF DRUG-RESISTANT STAPH INFECTION

“I speak for all of Brooklyn when I say that we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones who lost this young man. As a public health professional, I wish to underscore that his death is a jarring reminder of the epidemiological threats that persist, and the dire need to routinely reinforce health practices in our schools to prevent the spread of any infectious disease.

Borough President Marty Markowitz and I commend the quick action of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Department of Education, and the school in addressing this issue, and want to again express strong support for initiatives such as the DOE’s recently created Office of Fitness and Health Education, which promote preventive care in our school communities.

We urge residents in Brooklyn and beyond to follow the directives of public health officials in the wake of this recent tragedy.”
