BP MARKOWITZ APPOINTS DYKER HEIGHTS ATTORNEY AS NEW COUNSEL TO THE BOROUGH PRESIDENT
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz announced today the appointment of attorney Carlo A. Scissura as the next Counsel to the Borough President. Scissura assumes his new position on January 2, 2008, succeeding Frederick Arriaga, who was elected in Kings County as a Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York.
“Carlo’s exemplary legal expertise and dedication to education and community issues important to Brooklynites make him the ideal choice for Counsel,” said Borough President Markowitz. “He is a son of Brooklyn and is active in Italian-American programs and educational issues impacting public schools. Carlo has demonstrated excellence and integrity in his field, and I’m confident he will continue to do Brooklyn proud.”
“I am thrilled to have been chosen to serve as Counsel to the Borough President,” said Scissura. “Marty is one of the most effective leaders in New York City, and being a part of his executive staff is an honor for me.”
Scissura, 37, has a private practice specializing in real estate, estate planning and corporate law, and is an Associate Adjunct Professor at Baruch College of the City University of New York.
Scissura was born and raised in Brooklyn, growing up in Bensonhurst and attending Our Lady of Guadalupe School and Xaverian High School. He graduated with honors from Pace University in 1992, and attended Pace University School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 1995.
In 1999, Scissura was elected to Community School Board 20, and five years later was appointed by Borough President Markowitz to serve on the Community Education Council for District 20, where he serves as President and Chairman of the Legislative Committee. He is also a long time member of Community Board 11 and serves as the chair of the Law Committee.
In addition, Scissura is the Second Vice President of the Federation of Italian-American Organizations, where he has assisted in the building fund for the new Italian Cultural and Community Center and is the Master of Ceremonies for the Brooklyn Columbus Day Parade.
Scissura is single and lives in Dyker Heights.
