STATEMENT OF BP MARKOWITZ ON DEATH OF BROOKLYN'S NORMAN MAILER

"Norman Mailer was a one-man Brooklyn Cyclone—a literary lion. If he had only given us The Naked and the Dead, Armies of the Night, and The Executioner's Song, he would have been a towering talent, but his voracious curiosity and desire for the, shall we say, more 'zaftig' life of a vocal public intellectual led him to unleash his 'Brooklyn attitude' in other arenas—as a filmmaker, founder of the Village Voice, and even a candidate for mayor of New York. His Pulitzer Prizes and countless other honors have been testament to Brooklyn's rightful place as the literary capital of New York City. Norman Mailer was a fighter and a true Brooklyn boy, and I speak for all 2.5 million Brooklynites and book lovers and fans worldwide when I say we mourn his passing, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time."
