STATEMENT FROM BROOKLYN BOROUGH PRESIDENT’S OFFICE ON BROOKLYN SCHOOL CLOSINGS

“While we appreciate the merits of evaluating schools and closing those that consistently underperform, the Borough President and I are eager to learn more about how these particular schools were selected. Additionally, we are calling upon all officials involved to ensure that these and any future closings don’t cause undue upheaval for students, staff, parents and our Brooklyn communities. Switching schools, even to a smaller one in the same location, can be a traumatic experience for young people and add red tape that can be confusing to families. That is why our office will be monitoring this process, and advocating for these transitions to be as seamless as possible and result in a quantifiably improved educational environment for each and every student.”

——Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Yvonne Graham

Deputy Borough President Graham will be attending the Department of Education community meeting at 4:00 p.m. today at P.S. 26 (1014 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn)
