On Wednesday, September 20, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz visited
“A Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City,” an 8,000 square foot outdoor interactive exhibit in Prospect Park. The exhibit is sponsored by 1999 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Doctors Without Borders and is designed to stimulate public awareness of the plight of those around the world who have been forced to flee their homes because of war, conflict or natural disaster.
Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people in more than 70 countries effected by armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters. The US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants 2006 World Refugee Survey estimates that presently 33 million people from around the world are displaced from their homes.
Before moving to Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, the “Refugee Camp” will be open through Sunday, September 24, in the Long Meadow at Prospect Park and features guided tours of various sections of a typical refugee camp, including a food distribution area and a vaccination tent.
“I encourage New Yorkers and Brooklynites to take some time to visit this important educational exhibit, and that those with means will support Doctors Without Borders, who risk so much for our suffering neighbors on this earth,” said Borough President Markowitz.
