BOROUGH PRESIDENT MARKOWITZ HONORS WINNERS OF 2006 GREENEST BLOCK IN BROOKLYN CONTEST

6:00 P.M.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21
BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL ROTUNDA
209 JORALEMON STREET
BETWEEN COURT & ADAMS STREETS
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN

On Thursday, September 20, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Botanic Garden President Scot Medbury, and the Independence Community Foundation will honor all of the participants and winners of the 12th Annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest at an awards ceremony at Borough Hall.

Of this year’s record-breaking 250 entries, the East 25th Street block between Ave. D and Clarendon in Flatbush took home first prize for the second time in three years, narrowly besting competition from outstanding groups in Windsor Terrace and Fort Greene, who shared the second place spot.Third place went to a perennially competitive block from Bedford-Stuyvesant that took home the first place prize in 2003.

The Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest is a project of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Brooklyn GreenBridge Program in cooperation with Borough President Markowitz, and is sponsored by Independence Community Foundation.

“Twelve years of the greenest block in Brooklyn contest has shown us that gardening brings our communities closer together, uniting them with the common goal of beautifying the places we call home,” said Borough President Markowitz. “That’s why whether or not you have a green thumb, the greenest block contest makes every Brooklynite a winner!”

Borough President Markowitz and Brooklyn Botanic Garden President Scot Medbury will award certificates at Thursday’s event to congratulate and honor this year’s contest participants and winners who make Brooklyn even more beautiful block by block.
