BP MARKOWITZ TO JOIN FOOD BANK FOR NYC AND JUNIOR’S AS BOROUGH HALL GOES ORANGE FOR HUNGER WEEK
12:30 P.M.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13
BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL ROTUNDA
209 JORALEMON STREET
BETWEEN COURT & ADAMS STREETS
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN
On Friday, October 13, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join Food Bank For New York City and Junior’s proprietor Alan Rosen to kick off “NYC Goes Orange” hunger week. Orange is the color of hunger awareness and from October 16 to October 20 buildings all over New York including Brooklyn Borough Hall, the Empire State Building, and Lincoln Center will be lit orange to raise awareness of the fact that two million people in New York City are at risk of going hungry. Alan Rosen of Junior’s will be on hand with an orange pumpkin cheesecake to announce that Junior’s will donate a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of their seasonal cheesecake to Food Bank For New York City.
Food Bank For New York City, the city’s primary supplier of food for the hungry, helps provide more than 250,000 free meals served each day by more than 1,200 nonprofit community food programs in the five boroughs. Last year, Food Bank For New York City distributed more than 67 million pounds of food and was recognized as the 2004-05 Food Bank of the Year by America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s food bank network.
“It is wonderful to see how many Brooklyn organizations provide soup kitchens and food pantries, the most in the city, because it proves that Brooklynites share a deep concern regarding the issue of hunger,” said Borough President Markowitz. “Of course I am proud to go orange with Food Bank For New York City and Junior’s to raise awareness. But I am also hopeful that our City’s effort will succeed and that the day will soon come when no American will go hungry. In this day and age, we must do better.”
