BOROUGH PRESIDENT MARKOWITZ WELCOMES CRUISE SHIP ORIANA TO BROOKLYN

In photo (from left to right): NYC & Co. President Cristyne L. Nicholas, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Borough President Marty Markowitz, Oriana Captain Mike Carr, and Council Member David Yassky welcome the cruise ship Oriana to Brooklyn.

On Saturday, September 24, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYC & Company President Cristyne L. Nicholas in greeting the cruise ship Oriana at what will be Red Hook’s new Pier 12. Council Member David Yassky also attended.

“Visitors will have a chance to observe Brooklynites’ longstanding reputation for being reserved, modest, and shy,” joked Borough President Markowitz. “Once they step off the boat and experience Brooklynites’ world-famous hospitality, who knows? They might just stay forever.”

The Oriana docked at the temporary facility in Brooklyn on Saturday because it could not be accommodated at the New York Cruise Terminal on Manhattan’s West Side, where six other ships were scheduled to arrive last weekend. The Queen Mary 2 will be the first ship to dock at the completed terminal next spring.
