“One thing’s for sure—whether you’re Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, atheist, or you don’t know what you are, Adelman’s Kosher Deli is one of the best places to experience the magic of this classic Brooklyn cuisine,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “Only in Brooklyn can one of the finest kosher delicatessens in the nation be owned and operated by a proud Italian-American.”
On Sunday, March 20, Borough President Markowitz joined in celebrating the 26 th Anniversary of Adelman’s Kosher Deli with patrons, staff, and store owner Anthony Papeo. The deli, located at 1906 Kings Highway between Ocean Avenue and 19 th Street, opened on March 18, 1979. Adelman’s is widely known for its corned beef, pastrami, brisket, kugel, knishes and chicken soup with matzoh balls. “I guess by now I’m more Jewish than Christian, since I’m 50 years old now and I’ve been working here for 26,” said Papeo.
Esther and Paul Adelman ran the original Adelman’s Kosher Deli in Borough Park from the late 1930s into the 1960s until it was sold to new owners. The deli in Borough Park closed in 1981. Anthony Papeo began working at the Borough Park location in his early twenties. When the store opened on Kings Highway in 1979, he became a partner in the new venture. Anthony Papeo became the sole owner of Adelman’s Kosher Deli on Kings Highway in 1986.
