Manager of the New York Mets “goes home” to Brownsville
On Thursday, June 9, Borough President Marty Markowitz, residents of Tilden Houses and members of Brownsville Recreation Center welcomed Manager of the New York Mets Willie Randolph back to home to Brownsville. The borough president presented Randolph with a proclamation at Floyd Patterson field, officially declaring it, “Willie Randolph Day in Brooklyn, USA.” Willie Randolph grew up in Brownsville, lived in Tilden Houses, graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School, and spent hours perfecting his game in sand lots and parks in the neighborhood.
“On behalf of Tilden Houses, Brownsville Recreation Center, and all of Brooklyn, I am proud to say welcome home, Willie!” said Borough President Markowitz. “To all the children here today —if two kids from public housing like me and Willie can grow up to be borough president and manager of the Mets, not to mention an all-star for the Yankees — you can do it too. Always remember that whether you grow up to be an author or a professor, a doctor or a lawyer, an artist or a rapper, a Met or a Yankee or even a Cyclone — every Brooklynite is an all-star.”
Brooklynites received free Mets baseball caps and Subway sandwiches at the field.
