Markowitz Tells Secretary-General Kofi Annan to “Keep on Keepin’ on”
On Friday, June 17, Borough President Marty Markowitz met with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to further promote the idea that the United Nations move to Brooklyn while the Manhattan headquarters undergoes renovations. Markowitz presented Secretary-General Annan with a Brooklyn pin and a replica of the Brooklyn Bridge.
“I think Brooklyn, particularly downtown Brooklyn, is an ideal location for the United Nations,” said Markowitz. “ Brooklyn is home to everyone from everywhere, and every day when the delegates come to work they would experience our wonderful diversity. We have great transportation, world-class restaurants, top-notch cultural resources — you’ve got it all here in Brooklyn. While some may not agree with viewpoints expressed at the United Nations, I say it is always better to talk, to have a forum to discuss issues, rather than resort to fighting – that’s why I support the UN.”
The Borough President also offered words of encouragement to the Secretary General. “I know he’s faced with many challenges,” said Markowitz. “I told him we have an old saying in Brooklyn, ‘you got to keep on keepin’ on.’”
