On Tuesday, June 14, Borough President Marty Markowitz and the Junior League of Brooklyn hosted the first of a series of training sessions at Borough Hall to prepare teens in Brooklyn’s Summer HEAT program for their new jobs. Summer HEAT (Help Employ Ambitious Teens) is an innovative initiative created by the Brooklyn Borough President to encourage both private and non-profit organizations to hire Brooklyn young people, ages 16-18. The Junior League of Brooklyn is holding workshops on business etiquette for Summer HEAT participants throughout the month of June.
This year’s Summer HEATinitiative will start Tuesday, July 5 and will run through August. Employers will pay the young people at least the minimum wage, $6.00 an hour, for at least 25 hours a week, over the six-week period. Over 200 Brooklyn teens are expected to work with nearly 50 employers throughout the borough.
