BROOKLYN CELEBRATES LA PARADA BORICUA DE NUEVA YORK

Photographs by Laura Geiser

In photo 1: Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Humberto Soto, President of La Parada Boricua de New York, Parade Ambassador Pfc. Jean Oscar Cruz, and Luis Martinez, Vice President also of La Parade Boricua de New York.

On Sunday, July 17 La Parada Boricua de Nueva York and organizer Humberto Soto hosted the first annual parade dedicated to the brave men and women of Hispanic origin who are stationed in Iraq and all over the world in service to the nation. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz marched with community members and proclaimed it “Boricua Parade Day in Brooklyn, USA.” Pfc. Jean Oscar Cruz of Fort Hood's 4th Infantry Division, which captured Saddam Hussein, served as the parade’s ambassador.

The parade began on Grand Street and Bushwick Avenue and ended at Lindsay Park. Talented musicians and performers entertained those attending with a lively festival of salsa, bomba, plena, meringue and a host of other delights.
