On Friday, August 12, Borough President Marty Markowitz and representatives of the Pakistani community nationwide came together to celebrate Pakistani Independence Day by raising the Pakistani flag at Borough Hall. Pakistan gained its independence on August 14, 1947 .

“It is a great honor to be celebrating the 58 th Anniversary of Pakistan’s Independence here at Borough Hall, because Brooklyn is proud to be the Pakistani-American Capital of America,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “No other city, or state for that matter, in the country has a larger Pakistani population than Brooklyn ’s approximate 100,000 Pakistani-Americans. The richness of the people, the food, the religion, all of which helps make Brooklyn a diverse and peaceful place to be. Whether it is Pakistani, Jew, or Christian, we all live here in peace.”

The celebration continued in Brooklyn this weekend, ending with the 58 th annual Independence Festival, which was held on Sunday on Coney Island Avenue . Brooklyn has the largest Pakistani-American population of any city or state in America , centered around the Southern part of Brooklyn .
