On Wednesday, September 22, Brooklyn Borough President
Marty Markowitz hosted a reception in the Borough Hall Rotunda
welcoming Brooklyn’s two newest CUNY presidents –
Dr. Russell K. Hotzler, President of New York City College of
Technology and Dr. Regina S. Peruggi, President of Kingsborough
Community College.
“Brooklyn
prides itself on its institutions of higher learning,”
said Borough President Markowitz in his opening remarks. “Our
schools provide a superb level of education that rivals any
university in the country. We produce graduates who go on to
be leaders in every field, and go out into the world representing
Brooklyn and the quality education that they have received here.”
Borough
President Markowitz, who himself is a CUNY alumnus from the
Brooklyn College class of 1970, praised the leadership of Benno
Schmidt, Jr. in his role as Chairman of the Board of Trustees
of the City University of New York. Chairman Schmidt served
as President of Yale University as well as Dean of Columbia
Law School before being hand-selected and appointed by Governor
George Pataki to the CUNY Board of Trustees.
Dr. Russell
K. Hotzler has previously served the City University as Vice
Chancellor for Academic Program Planning. He also held the position
of Interim President at both York and Queens Colleges, earning
him the nickname of CUNY’s “Mr. Fixit” from
the New York Times.
Dr.
Regina S. Peruggi was formerly President of the Central Park
Conservancy and also was President of Marymount College for
11 years. Dr. Peruggi is the first woman president in the 40-year
history of Kingsborough Community College.
