On
Sunday, October 24, Brooklyn Borough President Marty
Markowitz, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) President Karen Brooks
Hopkins, Executive Producer Joseph V. Melillo, Director Emeritus
Harvey Lichtenstein, and Richard B. Fischer and Jeanne Donovan
Fischer and many others celebrated the completion of the restoration
of BAM’s landmark auditorium’s facade.
“In
addition to its beauty on the outside, the theater, dance, music
and film that goes on inside BAM continues to blaze the trail
for the artistic community in New York – and across America,”
said Borough President Markowitz. “BAM represents everything
that’s great about Brooklyn – one of the finest
examples of 20th Century architecture, the openness to everyone
from everywhere, the fact that we are the true creative community
of this city – it’s all right here for all to see
and enjoy.”
The
auditorium, originally constructed in 1908, now functions as
BAM’s main stage. The renovation project encompassed crucial
repairs to the façade of the building, including: restoration
of terra-cotta ornamentation; reconstruction of the parapet
and cornice; replacement of cracked brickwork and lintels; addition
of handicapped access; refurbishment of stained glass windows;
cleaning of facade; enhancement of exterior lighting; and new
signage.
