Over 8,500 Brooklynites Participate in the American Cancer Society’s Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness

On Sunday, October 17, Borough President Marty Markowitz marched through Prospect Park with Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham, New York City Council Member Yvette Clarke, and more than 8,500 Brooklynites in support of the fight against breast cancer. This year’s American Cancer Society campaign, with over 100 five-mile walks across the country, strives to raise dollars and hope for those who suffer from breast cancer and those at risk for developing the disease.

“As we all know, Brooklyn has the strongest women in the world, but the fight against breast cancer is too tough to fight alone,” said Borough President Markowitz. “We are so proud that Brooklynites recognize that fact and walk together in the fight against breast cancer.”

The four-mile march around Prospect Park was a part of the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” campaign which last year helped to raise over $28 million for research, education, and patient support and advocacy programs to defeat the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2004 more than 215,990 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States.
