On Tuesday, October 12, Brooklyn Borough President
Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Botanic Garden President Judith D.
Zuk, Independence Community Foundation Executive Director Marilyn
Gelber, and Senior Vice President of Consumer Banking of Independence
Community Bank Michael Raimonde honored the winners of the 10th
Annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest in an awards ceremony
at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Council Member Yvette Clarke and State
Assembly Member Joan Millman also attended the event.
“Stoop
by stoop, window by window, block by block, and neighborhood
by neighborhood — together we are cultivating a brighter
future for Brooklyn,” said Brooklyn Borough President
Marty Markowitz. “The greenest block awards are right
up there with the Oscars or the Emmys when it comes to prestige
and distinction in our great borough. So just like at the Oscars
or the Emmys, simply being part of the Greenest Block in Brooklyn
Contest makes you a winner - because it means your community
cares about making its quality of life the best it can possibly
be.”
E.
25th Street Block between Clarendon and Avenue D won first place
in the residential category and the AANT Association of the
Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (Atlantic between
Nevins and Third Avenue) in Boerum Hill won first place in the
commercial category. For a full list of winners and for more
info about the contest, visit www.bbg.org/greenbridge.
The
Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest is a project of Brooklyn
Botanic Garden’s Brooklyn GreenBridge Program in cooperation
with Borough President Marty Markowitz, and is sponsored by
Independence Community Foundation.
This year’s program set the record with 224 blocks registered
and more than 110,000 Brooklyn residents and businesses participating.
