Over 750 turkeys were given away to feed those most in need!
On Monday, November 22, Borough President Marty Markowitz gave away over 750 turkeys, more than 1800 pounds of apples, more than 1800 pounds of collard greens, more than 1500 pounds of baking potatoes and over 1000 pounds of sweet potatoes. From 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. representatives of 70 Brooklyn community groups including senior centers, soup kitchens, churches, and women’s shelters came to Borough Hall to pick up the turkeys and fresh produce, which will be used to feed thousands of less fortunate Brooklynites over the Thanksgiving holiday.
All of the food that was given away was graciously donated by Health Plus, Fulton Mall Improvement Association and the Korean-American Brooklyn Association, N.Y. Inc., with additional support from Key Food and Foodtown.
“I’m happy to report that this year my Thanksgiving food distribution has grown even larger,” said Borough President Markowitz. “We have even more food and even more groups participating, which means even more Brooklyn families will enjoy a turkey feast this Thanksgiving. We thank our generous sponsors for helping those families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to share in the joy of the holidays. Whether you call it a melting pot, a gorgeous mosaic or global smorgasbord, Brooklyn remains unique among urban areas in America and in the world because we play so many notes in the human symphony — and this week we give thanks for the beautiful harmony they make together.”
“The Fulton Mall Improvement Association is always proud to partner with the Borough President on this project that helps so many Brooklynites in need to enjoy the holidays," said Mike Weiss, Executive Director of the Fulton Mall Improvement Association. “We want to wish every family in Brooklyn a happy and healthy holiday season.”
“HealthPlus is in the business of helping Brooklynites have a healthier life. So we're proud to support Borough President Markowitz’s turkey giveaway,” said Tom Early, Executive Director of Health Plus. “We are so thrilled that more families in Brooklyn will have nutritious food for the holidays.”
“The Korean American Brooklyn Association of New York is honored to help ensure that Brooklyn families will have a great Thanksgiving,” said Kum-Ok Kim, President of Association. “We are pleased to once again work with Borough President Markowitz on this important project.”
