Brooklynite
raises HIV/AIDS awareness as he prepares for 2005 trans-Atlantic
rowing journey.
On Monday, June 28, 2004, Brooklyn Borough President
Marty Markowitz praised Brooklyn’s Victor Mooney for completing
his rowing marathon in preparation for his journey from Senegal
to Brooklyn to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS. Victor Mooney started
his 48-hour rowing marathon on Friday on the steps of Borough Hall
and finished on Sunday, June 27th, which was National HIV Testing
Day.
“It
never ceases to amaze me how creative Brooklynites are when expressing
themselves, especially when it comes to helping others,” said
Borough President Markowitz. “Victor Mooney is truly showing
the spirit of Brooklyn with his rowing project to raise awareness
of HIV/AIDS, and I know he’ll stay right on course.”
The
rowing marathon simulated Mooney’s planned 8,000-mile trans-Atlantic
journey from Goree, Senegal, in West Africa to Brooklyn beginning
in February 2005 to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. At Borough Hall,
Mooney alternated rowing for two hours and resting for one hour,
as he will do on the specially designed rowboat he’s taking
on the solo journey from Africa to Brooklyn. The route Mooney is
taking will pay homage to the voyage taken by slave ships from Africa.
Regarding
his trans-Atlantic trip, Mooney said, “My trip ends when I
cross under the Brooklyn Bridge — that’s how I’ll
know I’m home.”
Mooney,
who works as a communications officer at the ASA College of Advanced
Technology in downtown Brooklyn, has been inspired to raise HIV/AIDS
awareness by the death of his brother and by the work of the late
New York City Cardinal John O’Connor. Anyone can assist Mooney’s
effort by donating $10 in exchange for having their name imprinted
on the side of the 24-foot rowboat. Further proceeds will also benefit
various AIDS organizations.
