Today,
Borough President Marty Markowitz joined New York City Department
of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Brooklyn
Parks Commissioner Julius Spiegel, Prospect Park Alliance President
Tupper Thomas, and Alliance members in celebrating the completion
of the renovation of the Bailey Fountain at Grand Army Plaza.
The event also featured a fashion show, with Brooklyn bridal
designs, and a display of wedding cakes to recognize the fountain’s
leading role in many Brooklyn wedding portraits.
“For Brooklynites who have eagerly awaited
the return of one of our borough’s most beautiful public
spaces at Grand Army Plaza, the wait is over. Today, Prospect
Park, where the designers got it right, gets back one of its
crown jewels, as the Bailey Fountain gurgles back to life,”
said Borough President Markowitz. “We all thank the Prospect
Park Alliance and its tireless leader, Tupper Thomas, for guiding
the shining star of Brooklyn’s parks back to the glorious
splendor it deserves.”
The Bailey Fountain is reopening following a
two-year, $1.5 million renovation and reconstruction project.
Funded through the Mayor’s capital budget, with funds
allocated by former Councilmember Kenneth Fisher, and with additional
funding by the Vanneck Bailey Foundation, the reconstruction
project included the reconstruction and stabilization of the
Fountain’s central sculpture, its foundations and the
plaza surrounding it. It is a part of The Campaign for Prospect
Park.
The Bailey Fountain is named after Brooklyn-based
financier and philanthropist Frank Bailey and his wife Mary
Louise Bailey. It is the fourth fountain to occupy the space
at Grand Army Plaza.
