BOROUGH PRESIDENT MEETS WITH HAITIAN LEADERS TO DISCUSS COMMUNITY ISSUES AND CONCERNS

Photograph by Amelia D'Entrone

Borough President Marty Markowitz met with several Haitian leaders today at Borough Hall to discuss some of the major issues and concerns facing the Haitian-American community and to begin the process of working to find solutions to some of its most pressing problems.

“Whatever impacts the Haitian-American community, impacts Brooklyn. The more you flourish – the better it is for everyone. Even though Haitian Brooklynites have made tremendous strides and contributions throughout the borough, I know you have set even loftier goals,” Borough President Markowitz said. “Your issues and concerns are at the front burner here at Borough Hall, and if we continue working together, absolutely anything is possible for the Haitian capital of America.”

A number of issues were discussed including immigration problems, the importance of teaching Haitian studies in public schools and universities, making sure healthcare providers can effectively communicate and provide culturally sensitive care, increasing the visibility of the Haitian business districts and boosting tourism throughout our vibrant Haitian communities.

Assemblymember Nick Perry, Councilmember Yvette Clarke and Councilmember Kendall Stewart were also in attendance.
