BOROUGH PRESIDENT HAILS BROOKLYN'S KIDS
FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS

Three events this week showcase Brooklyn’s youth
Borough President Marty Markowitz, hailed Brooklyn’s kids this week for their achievements on the national stage. Ranging from singing at the salute to the Statue of Liberty to appearing on Jay Leno’s New Year’s show, Brooklyn’s youngsters are in the spotlight.
“These kids are letting America know what we have known forever, that Brooklyn is like no other place in the world,” said Borough President Markowitz. “We are home to everyone from everywhere, and we represent the best of America. This is just further proof of all the talent that is born and raised in Brooklyn!”
Bensonhurst’s Edward B. Shallow (I.S. 227) is a regional winner of The Home of the Free program, sponsored by Washington Mutual Bank and the New York Historical History. The Home of the Free program is an educational project that teaches 7th and 8th graders about photography. Photos are submitted to a regional and national judging committee. There are 1500 entries and of that amount, only 72 photos are chosen. Under the direction of the lead instructor, Mrs. Susan Molishever, IS 227’s team of photographers won the regional competition with their photo of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and his staff. The photo is on display at the New York Historical Society in New York. Edward B. Shallow IS 227’s Principal is Robert Benitez.
The Show Choir of Park Slope’s William Alexander Middle School 51 led by Choral Director Alan Zwirn will be performed on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at the Salute to the Statue of Liberty. William Alexander Middle School 51’s Principal is Xavier Castelli.
Jackie Robinson Steppers, consisting of 130 kids from the Albany Houses, ranging from age 8-18, will be performing on the Jay Leno New Year’s Eve show. Under the leadership of Tyrone Brown and his assistant, Maxine Barnes, these kids competed in and won the national Drumline Championship. They are the first New York representatives to enter the competition in 30 years and the first organization of its kind from Brooklyn, to win the championship
