BOROUGH PRESIDENT HELPS BREAK GROUND FOR RENOVATION OF HISTORIC WEEKSVILLE HOMES
On October 29th, Borough President Marty Markowitz (center) took part
in a groundbreaking ceremony for the restoration of the four Hunterfly
Road Houses, which are the last remaining buildings in the pre-Civil War
community of Weeksville. The Borough President will contribute a total
of almost $4 million dollars in funding for this historic project.
"Weeksville is one of Brooklyn's and our country's most incredible
landmarks. Its historic homes are a testament to the tremendous resolve
of Brooklyn's African American community before and following the Civil
War and continue to be a source of inspiration and pride for the community
today. While it has an amazingly rich and interesting past, Weeksville's
history continues to be written every single day," said the Borough
President.
This groundbreaking is part of a major five-year restoration
and construction project undertaken by the society to restore the historic
houses, develop the grounds around the site and construct a Museum/Education
Center, making the society’s collections and the history of the
community more accessible to the general public.
