BOROUGH PRESIDENT JOINS PROTEST AGAINST PROPOSED POWER PLANT IN GREENPOINT - WILLIAMSBURG

On October 29th, Borough President Marty Markowitz (speaking) joined Assemblyman Joe Lentol (left of sign), Councilman David Yassky and the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Waterfront Task Force on a New York Water Taxi to protest the proposed construction of an 1100-megawatt power plant on the Greenpoint-Williamsburg waterfront.

"This proposed power plant is simply incompatible with current and planned land uses for one of Brooklyn’s most precious resources, its waterfront,” said the Borough President. “The Greenpoint-Williamsburg community has worked many years to improve and open up waterfront access, advocating a mix of residential, open space and commercial uses. The 1,100-megawatt power plant will only detract from the value of our waterfront and threaten its economic viability. Furthermore, the public health of the Greenpoint and Williamsburg residents are already compromised by excessive air pollution. There are no conceivable benefits from the proposed project that would justify the construction of this mammoth power plant."

The Greenpoint-Williamsburg Waterfront Task Force has collected 10,000 signed postcards opposing the plant that were delivered to Governor George Pataki's Manhattan Office.
