BOROUGH PRESIDENT ANGRILY DENOUNCES MORE HOMELESS SHELTERS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN BROOKLYN WITH NO PRIOR NOTICE

“I am incredibly angry that three more homeless shelters – 383 Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Heights, 790 St. John’s Place in Crown Heights & 311 Eldert Lane in Bushwick - are going to be opening in Brooklyn next week with no prior notice. Receiving a phone call late on a Friday afternoon does not give myself, other local elected officials or the community the ability to work with the City to decide where these shelters are best situated. It shows a complete lack of respect for the communities where these shelters are opening. While recognizing that the Department of Homeless Services is under enormous pressure to house a record number of people, the City must stop sneaking these shelters into our communities. It shows no attempt to equitably distribute these facilities, and it reduces the property available to build more permanent housing which is the permanent solution.”
