BOROUGH PRESIDENT HONORS CHILDREN'S PLEAS FOR WORLD PEACE

On November 8th, Borough President Marty Markowitz (clapping) honored a group of children from P.S. 230 in Kensington for creating a banner dedicated to the victims of the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. The banner was recently on display at Borough Hall.

“Last year’s attacks on our city and our nation were also an attack on our values – and a challenge to our ability to live by those values,” said Borough President Markowitz. “But Brooklynites are resilient and generous. And we value our borough’s rich diversity - because Brooklyn today is America tomorrow! This beautiful banner and your efforts together to imagine world peace are a great example of those values and Brooklyn is very proud of you. The P.S. 230 community is showing the world the very best of our borough and our nation.”

This banner project, which incorporates symbols of peace, began as the idea of one parent, Martha Walker. She is an artist who began working with her daughter’s 3rd grade class last year on activities designed to help them imagine a world at peace through discussion, music, storytelling and making art. Ms. Walker worked closely with P.S. 230 art teacher Cathleen Byrne, who lost a brother in the terrorist attacks. The project grew to include the whole school and the display in Borough Hall was only a small part of the resulting banner, representing four of P.S. 230’s 35 classes.
