BOROUGH PRESIDENT LIGHTS ONE OF BROOKLYN'S LARGEST MENORAHS

On December 2nd, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz (right) and Rabbi Aron Raskin of Congregation B’nai Avraham (left) lit the Rabbi Jacob J. Hecht Menorah, which is the largest Menorah in Downtown Brooklyn. The Borough President also handed out special Chanukah candy to all of the children in attendance.

“Tonight, we celebrate Chanukah, the festival of lights, by lighting a candle on this beautiful menorah,” said Borough President Markowitz. “During this eight-day festival, we remember how the Jewish people fought and overcame persecution, and we affirm our commitment to upholding the ideals of religious freedom. In America, and particularly here in the borough of Brooklyn, we are fortunate to live in a tremendously diverse society -- one in which we strive to respect all people, regardless of race, creed, or religion. This is the main lesson of the festival of Chanukah. We must respect the beliefs of others. I want to wish everybody a healthy and a happy Chanukah and holiday season.”

There were performances by the Yeshiva Ohel Moshe School Choir and by Dovid Altheim, a one-man band. There was also delicious food and prizes for the children.

This event was a collaboration of the Borough President, Congregation B’nai Avraham and the Chabad of Brooklyn Heights.

This celebration was sponsored by Phylis Jalbert, in loving memory of Michael Klahr, & 1339 Development Corp.
