Send a Brooklyn kid to camp!

Send a Brooklyn Kid to Camp
Photographed by Kathryn Kirk

“I had a wonderful time. My favorite thing was doing art there. I made a bird house. I painted it like a rainbow. I still have it and it’s beautiful. And they taught me how to swim.” Maris Cooper, age 9, 2004 Camp Brooklyn camper. “She came home and kept talking about camp. She still talks about it. She really enjoyed all the activities and had a good time.” Nicole Cooper, Maris’ mom.

The comments of Maris and her mom illustrate what Borough President Marty Markowitz always says – “Summer camp is great for kids, and even better for their parents!” Marty launches his fourth season of Camp Brooklyn this summer, sending Brooklyn children to camp for two weeks and giving them the opportunity to experience the great outdoors.

Last summer, Camp Brooklyn sent 202 children for two-week stays at camps in beautiful upstate New York. Once again, Marty is seeking to double that number. Since January special events hosted by the borough president, including two Chinese New Year’s banquets and a special Brooklyn Night performance of the new Broadway play “Brooklyn Boy” have raised funds to provide full scholarships for 75 campers. Donations from generous individuals, families, and businesses are needed to send even more kids to camp.

Borough President Markowitz has always said that his camp experience changed his life, and he has committed himself to changing the lives of as many Brooklyn youngsters as he can. Every single dollar he raises through special events and 100 percent of all donations go towards a Brooklyn child’s camp experience – not a dime is spent on administrative costs or overhead.

Please join in helping provide this experience of a lifetime for a Brooklyn kid. Send in a contribution form and please be as generous as you can.For more information or to make a contribution, please call Quentin Streets at Brooklyn Borough Hall, 718-802-3761.
