Att: Marianne Ferrara, P.S. 277

Dear Ms. Ferra:

It is my pleasure to inform you that Coral Foxworth, who attends your school in Class 5-206 (teacher: Mrs. Corrado) has been selected as the award winning poet for January, 2003 by the Brooklyn Poet Laureate in Brooklyn Outreach under the auspices of the Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. She will be honored on Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm on January 29th at the Park Slop Barnes & Noble located on the corner of the 6th Street and 7th Avenue in Brooklyn. As Brooklyn Poet Laureate I will read her poem and present her award recognizing her talent and achievement. Following this there will be a featured Brooklyn poet and an open mic.

I know you will make every effort to invite her family, friends, classmates and school staff to share in her recognition as the first young poet to be honored by Brooklyn Poetry Outreach.

My congratulations to all of you for helping to revitalize our borough through cultivating its talented young people.

Sincerely,

Ken Siegleman
Brooklyn Poet Laureate

Sojourner Speaks

Coral Foxworth

Come from old plantation
Come to freedom
Come to be our voice
Come and make the choice

Tell it true, to
Set them free
Take a stand on slavery

Speaking of heaven
For all of thee
Snatch their whips with words
Oh, Sojourner
Let your voice be heard
Oh, Sojourner
Don’t speak it low
Speak it out loud
To all nations, people and crowds
After then, oh, then you’ll see,
After you were the best you can be
You’ll come back to me and say
“Slavery has gone its way”!
